Happy 4th! My husband is off today and I'm not sure what plans we have yet, but it's supposed to be nice. It would be awesome to be able to spend the day at Lake Tahoe! We haven't been up there this summer yet. I wonder how crowded it will be up there today though.
My favorite thing about Independence Day is the fireworks! Before we had our baby Ella, my husband and I would go to Commons Beach really early before it got crowded. A trip to Costco was always a must a few days before to grab our usual favorites: brie, salami, sourdough bread, fruit, and white wine. Some other things we would have in tow is a bottle of sunscreen (of course), some towels, and a change of clothes. We would put all that in a basket and off to the lake we go! As soon as we arrive, we would find a good spot and set up our dome tent where we would spend the day in. If you haven't been to Commons Beach, it's a park by the beach and each year on the fourth of July local vendors come together in the parking lot. They sell homemade popcorn, balloons, ice cream, and there are also some food trucks around the area. It's a fun environment and the reason why we like Commons Beach is because it is family friendly. Otherwise, we would run into college kids who are inebriated and we have always liked to avoid that kind of scene. Even back then without our baby, we always enjoyed spending the day around families. We have met some cool people from all over the world and getting to know others have always been enjoyable for us.
Spending the fourth at Commons Beach has been a tradition for my husband and I. The food, the small community, and the fireworks are all so much fun.
Of course, now that we are parents we have taken our daughter to Commons Beach. I remember the first time we went. She was about 6 months or so and she just had the best time playing at the park. She especially enjoyed the swing which is still her favorite to this day! She also enjoyed playing on the grass crawling... or butt scooting. She never really crawled. All she did was scoot her butt and pull herself along with her hands to get around. Next thing we knew, she was up on two feet and running at 12 months! Time flies. The fourth of every month gets her closer to her birthday, so today she is exactly 32 months! That means she'll be three in just 4 months. It's amazing the growth and development she has achieved so far and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for her. I know it will be great!
Although the fourth of July is known for cook-outs and fireworks, let us not forget the true reason why we are able to celebrate with our loved ones. Always remember: Freedom isn't free. However you choose to celebrate our country's independence, let us take the time to thank all those who served and who are serving our country. Personally, I am thankful for my husband who served in the Marine Corps during the gulf war. Hurrah! Be safe and happy fourth!
